Wild Stuff That Spins Up On the Internet

Section-2 ... what?  Take down the Fed? All kinds of wild stuff ... It's fun and probably a good source of implausible action adventure movies.

High Art, Low Art — What Is Art?

Art actually is a word that means being able to do something. The kind of art here is I suppose a kind of "low" art in the sense of appealing to the common person. But what is really art is something that appeals to the sense of beauty or quality in people. What commonly goes by the name of art is often not very artful in that sense. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien agreed that myth was about what is true, it expresses a truth that cannot be expressed in any other way. I think art is like that. To be truly art it must express something that rings of truth.

The True Myth

C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien in conversation.  This video is a conflation of several conversations that C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien had which express the nature of "myth" and the foundational reality of the myth made real, the intersection in history of God and man.  Myth is more than story for as Lewis said "a myth is a story that moves you no matter how badly told."  I'm not sure I have that exact since I'm quoting from memory, but it is the characteristic that is a signature of myth.  We are each mini-myths in a way.  Reality is woven of all our threads as the Fates spin, measure out, weave and cut our lives so that we create the majestic tapestry which is the reality conceived by the Creator.

Confessions of a Bibliophile

SEE HERE I confess that I only have 10,000 books so the idea of someone having 50,000 fills me with a certain sentiment that some might mistake for envy.  I can really sympathize with the idea of whiling away time in used book stores.  They are filled with old books and it is well understood by every bibliophile that old books are better than new books almost always.  Why that is I'm not entirely sure but I suspect it has something to do with the slow degeneration of the society so that increasingly new books are not about anything really worth reading about.  Of course the people that get these books don't quite get that.  Perhaps they would if they were to follow C.S. Lewis's advice to read an old book every time after reading a new book.  Of course that means you have to find an old book.  The libraries, run no doubt with the best of intentions are throwing out the old books so that soon enough they have nothing in them worth reading.  On the other hand that means you can get the really good books, that is the old books, at bargain prices.  There, I've given away the secret.

3D Printing of Gun Parts? How Things Have Changed

SEE HERE Check it out.  It doesn't last long due no doubt to the strength of materials issues but it is still fascinating what people are doing with the 3D printing technology as it matures.  MORE
